Katydid Silhouette

© Jeff R. Clow. A small nymph katydid in our garden from a couple of years back.....I couldn't get the light that I needed so I went for the silhouette because I thought those long legs and antenna would show up well.

Golden Morning at Banff

© Jeff R. Clow. Hard to imagine that such a pristine and quiet landscape location is only five minutes from the city of Banff.....but it is literally on the outskirts of town. The air was crisp and the silence was magical. If you are interested in photography, you need to visit Banff at least once in your life.

Old Time Tetons

© Jeff R. Clow. I began experimenting with the latest Topaz Photoshop and Photoshop Elements plug-in called B&W Effects and think it's one heck of a bargain at the special price of $29.99 for the next two weeks. This is an original color photo I took last month in Grand Teton National Park - and using this plug-in I was able to achieve an old time postcard look and feel to the modern image.

I have been experimenting with the latest Topaz Photoshop and Photoshop Elements plug-in called B&W Effects and think it's one heck of a bargain at the special price of $29.99 for the next two weeks. Finally

© Jeff R. Clow. For many years I've admired so many good hummingbird shots from others, but getting one myself has always proven to be a frustrating quest. We've had lots of visitors to our garden, but if you've ever tried to shoot one of these ... you probably know all the things that can go wrong. After many, many attempts - I finally got a shot against the background I wanted, with wing motion and decent details. This was taken with a Nikon D7000 coupled with a Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8 lens and a Nikkor 2x teleconverter. Thanks for stopping by my 500px photo page today. Much appreciated.

Bull Elk Breakfast

© Jeff R. Clow. Proof positive that getting up early has some nice rewards while visiting Banff National Park. This big guy was feeding near Two Jack Lake and I had to actually back up as I was so close that the lens combination I had on my D7000 (70-200mm f/2.8 with 2x teleconverter) would not allow me to get the whole bull in the frame at first....

Peyto Lake Blue

© Jeff R. Clow. Yes, the water at Peyto Lake in Banff National Park is really that magical shade of turquoise.....due to glacial silt. I'm off on another photo adventure to the Tetons and will be absent from 500px for awhile. Stay well, my friends.

Moose-Wilson Early Morning Light

© Jeff R. Clow. This shows one of the many reasons why it pays to get up before dawn and drive along Moose-Wilson Road in Grand Teton National Park. This was taken with a Nikon D700 coupled with a Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8 lens on Monday morning in Jackson Hole....

A Tad Too Close

© Jeff R. Clow My friend Daryl Hunter took me to an area where moose had been frequenting and we walked in two different directions. I saw a female and headed over to get a shot of her eating off a willow tree. This young bull moose walked up behind me while I was photographing the female moose and then proceeded to let me know that I was on his land.... Adrenaline pumping? You bet. Immediately all my senses were on full alert, including the fear factor. Was I too close? Yes. Way too close. Did I shoot this shot as I backed away? You bet I did with my heart pumping big time.

Face to Face

© Jeff R. Clow I was photographing a female moose in the Tetons last week with my friend Daryl Hunter when this young bull walked up on top of me. I was able to get a couple of "way too close" shots of him as I backed away with my heart racing...

The Pond

© Jeff R. Clow. Daryl Hunter - a great shooter and a good friend of mine who lives in the area - suggested we hike into this off the beaten path location inside Grand Teton National Park. Having come up from a Dallas altitude of 600 feet just the night before, the elevation of almost 7000 feet had me huffing and puffing all the way. But the end result was this magical pond on a beautiful autumn morning in Jackson Hole.

Grizzly in the Berries

© Jeff R. Clow A silver tipped Canadian grizzly that I encountered in September, 2010 on the road to Moraine Lake in Banff National Park. It was raining on and off and his fur had become slick with the moisture. He was gorging himself on hawthorne berries and didn't pay me any attention as I photographed him from the relative safety of my rental car. He was about 15 to 18 feet away....and my heartbeat was definitely accelerating the whole time I was alongside this magnificent creature.

© Jeff R. Clow As I drove by this scene near Oxbow Bend it took a second for my mind to process it .... since it was so unexpected. There was no one else around and I found it hard to comprehend that the moose was so perfectly positioned so that I could capture him and the surrounding scene.

Pastoral Pasture - 2012

© Jeff R. Clow I've been fortunate to have a lot of my photo work published over the years but this shot remains one of my personal favorites. On a visit to Jackson Hole with my wife, we stopped at Elk Ranch Flats and this friendly horse walked over on a beautiful day and helped me set up the shot that literally went around the world. Its been on book covers, a worldwide ad campaign, a music cd, several calendars and apparently resonates with a lot of viewers because it represents an era when the west was wide open spaces with very little civilization. I've reworked the shot a bit with the latest software that did not exist when I first took the shot in 2006, but the basic buidling blocks never change: A golden pasture, a lone horse at the fence and those magnificent Tetons

The Magic of Good Light

© Jeff R. Clow It really all is about the light, isn't it? I've stood at Oxbow Bend on dozens and dozens of different mornings and marveled at how the light can change the scene so magically. This particular morning was really special - the low hanging clouds, the burst of light as it broke through, and the way the whole scene seemed to create a feeling of serenity for the few of us there at the moment. It's really not about the camera body or the lens or the f/stop. It's about the light.

Lunch Tree Hill View

© Jeff R. Clow This was the view that John D. Rockefeller, Jr. and his family saw when Horace Albright pitched the idea that only a wealthy man could save the Jackson Hole valley from being overrun by commercial interests. They were having a picnic lunch at this overlook. Not too long afterward, Rockefeller wired Mr. Albright - then the Superintendent of Yellowstone National Park to the north - three simple words: "Buy it All" Most - if not all - conservationists will tell you the only reason Grand Teton National Park exists as it is today is because of that lunch, and this view.

The Favorite

© Jeff R. Clow One of the many questions that Jim Nix posed for his online interview with me was which of my photos was my favorite.....and after much consideration, I decided it was this one taken on a magical morning at Oxbow Bend.
